UNC Welcomes Lee Roberts as Permanent Chancellor

After months of speculation, Lee Roberts, the interim leader of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been chosen as the 13th chancellor of the institution, approved by the UNC Board of Governors. The decision marks the conclusion of a lengthy chancellor search process in the public university system of North Carolina, which has seen multiple leadership changes in recent times.

UNC System President Peter Hans, responsible for nominating the chancellor candidate, emphasized the need for a fresh perspective to navigate the university through challenging times in higher education. Hans expressed confidence in Roberts' ability to lead UNC during this critical period, highlighting Roberts' track record of engaging with dissenting opinions and thoughtful critics.

Roberts, who assumed the role of interim chancellor in December, brings a background in finance, having served as the state budget director under former Gov. Pat McCrory and as the founder of an investment firm in Raleigh. His leadership was evident during campus protests, including those related to the conflict in Gaza.

Selected from a pool of finalists by UNC System President Hans, Roberts' appointment as the permanent chancellor comes after earning praise for his handling of campus issues. His appointment was met with approval by the UNC Board of Governors, signaling a new chapter for UNC Chapel Hill under his leadership.
